I have the best job in the world. Not a lot of money, but great personal satisfaction. People come to me burdened with stress. After ten minutes in my chair, receiving a back rub, they change before my eyes. Strained, frowning faces soften and relax. When they slowly raise their faces from the head rest, they look rested, relaxed, and transformed into a younger, happier version of themselves.
Because of their response and my joy in doing the work, I am changed too. I feel like a press agent for massage. My mission is to awaken people to the importance of taking a few minutes to relax and leave stress behind. My hope is that the ten minute back rub will lead people to receive more body work including table massage.
A ten minute back rub is an excellent introduction to further body work because it is inexpensive and allows people to keep their clothes on. Many corporations in Cincinnati sponsor seated chair massage at their workplace. Studies have shown that a brief back rub improves productivity and enhances employee morale.
At corporations, people can be scheduled for a brief chair massage in a quiet (or even a noisy) corner without disrupting the normal work day. The back rubs do not need to be done in a totally separate room. When people are in the mood to relax, they will relax even with lots going on in the background.
I have given back rubs to mothers of demanding children during a Health Fair. Salsa dancing and rope jumping contests were taking place just ten feet away. But the harried mothers sat in the chair, tuned out the world and became calm and relaxed. (Amazing!)
WHY GET A BACK RUB?
Why doesn't everyone stop for a back rub when they see me? Many people feel too busy or are unwilling to take the time for themselves. Others have never experienced a seated chair massage, and have no idea how powerful the work will be.
Some of the most satisfying changes I have witnessed were from people who were pushed into my chair by a caring friend. The friend says: "I'll pay. You have to try this" The skeptical client says, "I have never done anything like this before." When they raise their heads from the head rest, they are doubly transformed: once from the relaxation and twice by having a whole new world of experience open to them.
